Colour profiles are a useful way of separating full-colour artwork or photographs into printable Riso layers.
A conventional colour image is commonly separated into four CMYK channels: Cyan / Magenta / Yellow / Black. In conventional process printing, those four channels combine to reproduce a full-colour image.
Risograph printing doesn't have to follow those colours. Instead, we can use the individual channels as stencils and assign different Riso inks to them. For example, rather than printing four process colours, a photograph might be separated into two or three channels and printed using two or three spot colours. Profiles are a great tool for creating separations for the Risograph process, especially when the source image is flattened and made up of lots of colours - such as a photograph.
Profiles work by looking at your full colour image (RGB image) but recreating it with specific ink colours within the Risograph range. These special colours are referred to as 'SPOT Colours'. We can print a full colour image with just Teal and Orange inks to help create something different and more interesting.
